The soul.

Bentrice Jusu is a visual artist and performer whose gifts captivate diverse audiences. She’s received broad recognition for her innovation around difficult social issues and commitment to honoring her Liberian heritage and deeps roots in Trenton. Her work and community engagement have been recognized widely, both nationally and as far as Europe and East Africa, including at Studio Arts Center International and the Tanzania International Film Festival. Her medium of choice ranges from microphone to paintbrush to camera and beyond, but the constant throughout Bentrice’s work is that she remains unapologetic and unashamed—combatting normalcy in artistic, intellectual, and intimate spaces. Prior work includes her documentary and interactive public art piece, Corner Boy’s Song, in which she worked with young men participating in informal economy to create poetry and video about their experiences; and the Art All Night discussion series, in which she explored segregation, violence, and the arts in the aftermath of the Art All Night shooting with Princeton University Students. Bentrice was the last scheduled performer on the main stage at this event before her set was cancelled in the events leading up to the shooting. Bentrice has also been featured alongside Alice Walker at the Brooklyn Museum and Dr. Notzake Shange in a host of performances and exhibitions.

be·come /bəˈkəm/ - to realize what you want to be and actively exude and pursue that.

Become™ is a Clothing, Film, public art and Performance movement that embodies traditional practices from the African Diaspora and merges it into a modern context that transcends to and for those who are often times overlooked and ignored.

Becoming™ is to Consume...

With a mild form of ADD and belief exceeding the realities of her neighborhood, Bentrice Jusu founded Become™ after her hesitancy to pursue her artistic passions and talents. After realizing that she was spending more time training and growing young artists in Both Hands: The Artlet, rather than developing her own artwork, Jusu underwent retrospection and got to work.

Becoming™ is to Create...

Becoming is Acceptance of Change
